The Last Stop is a composition about the city of Los Angeles that embraces the familiarity of the city’s often insidious relationship with illusion and reality at the cost of living in a sprawling metropolis that stands in as a microcosm for humanity’s search for hope. I would like to note that, in the spirit of Charles Mingus, all playing instructions (including arrangement of the structure/form of the work) were both given orally to respective collaborators during rehearsal and customized communally. The written score served as a map to facilitate my ideas, and although performers were to be engaged with my written parts, they were asked to give the same amount of focus and attention to the immediate human ecology of their collective sound making from the point of starting to engage with the work up to, and including, the performance itself.

Recorded Live by: Wayne Peet
