To shape-shift is to imitate, implicate, and imagine embodying different forms. Across cultures and time, shapeshifters subvert narrative, power, and meaning by unsettling the complex, porous boundary between human and beyond-human. Inspired by Yusef Komunyakaa’s Warhorses, a collection of poems exploring humanity’s history of violence and obsession with weaponry, Shape Shift is an intimate gradient that explores the carnal, human impulse to shift the meaning of things in complex ways. The layers of screen-printed plexiglass, illuminated from above and below, invite subtleties of interaction and shades of meaning that appear, pulse, flex, and refract, engendering the feeling of meeting up with the mercurial gestures behind the human proclivity to harness power.
