In The Saddest Noise, a snare drum—an instrument historically connected to warfare as its sonic accompaniment, morale booster, and rhythmic regulator for the loading of weapons—becomes the protagonist for examining the relationship between the instrumentalist and transformative views of technology. The snare drum embodies specific behavior-shaping values, which is why it’s mostly played with techniques and sonic affordances connected to military roots. In our interactive installation, which utilizes live sound/video processing developed in collaboration with interactive technologist, Yonatan Rozin, and Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center, montage and simultaneity reference these roots, while other tactics work to demilitarize the drum by rematerializing it, essentially reorienting its sonic capacities utilizing ‘non-standard’ techniques.

This video is a proof of concept as we develop this work.
