What Happened
The conceptual impulse for Ah, Raza! began as a moment of psychic disequilibrium that prompted us to examine what it means to identify oneself as an American artist. During two, week-long residencies in Brownsville, Texas, we were able (with the invaluable contribution of many wonderful collaborators) to gather the bits and pieces that would become the whole. Stage one of our project is a live, performative ethnography that intertwines various sonic environments (sound ethnography and an original score) with an intersection of a multiplicity of gazes (video ethnography and still photography).
Rhizomes
Ah, Raza! is a confederacy of components that broadens ones vision of how to be what one is. As such, phase two of the project (which is currently in development) will entail loading up our car with all necessary equipment and performing Ah, Raza! in communities along the U.S.-México border, essentially using the performance of the piece as a point of reference, departure, and return for talking about the webs of meaning and significance that people along the border are immersed in. Our tour will begin in the Lower Río Grande Valley of South Texas in Fall 2010.
